“Reality TV is not the way. I mean, you can. It works for some,” she told Sister 2 Sister.
The “Person of Interest” star gave her breakout performance in the 2001 film, Baby Boy. Since then, she’s racked up credentials in movies such as Not Easily Broken, Hustle & Flow and the 2010 Karate Kid remake.
In 2008, she co-starred with Brad Pitt in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, for which she received that Oscar nomination.
Taraji, who earned a degree in Theater Arts from Howard University, advised wannabe actresses that reality TV is not a short cut. They must learn the art form.
“Study it. Study it. It’s a craft, and you gotta study it,” she said.
While some personalities, such as Tami Roman of “Basketball Wives,” have scored guest-starring roles after rising to stardom on reality shows, few have been able to parlay those experiences into lucrative acting careers.
Taraji warned that’s not the way to achieve her type of success; however, she doesn’t deny that there’s a place for reality stars on the entertainment landscape.
“It depends on what you want. If you want reality TV, fabulous, go do it. But, if you’re trying to follow in my footsteps, you gotta train. That’s what I did,” she said.
